A CHINESE EXPORT ARMORIAL SOUP PLATE FROM A SERVICE MADE FOR EMPRESS CATHERINE II OF RUSSIA CIRCA 1785

There is a 3 1/4 inch long haircrack running from the rim towards the center of the soup plate. It is riveted with a metal rivet on the back mid-way along its length, and sealed with a glue-like substance on the underside. Otherwise in good condition with very crisp, unrubbed enamels and gilding.

Catherine II 'The Great' of Russia reigned alone from 1762-1796. The present piece is from one of two Chinese export services decorated with her arms, the other dating to circa 1775. Examples of plates from both services were in the Collection of Khalil Rizk, sold in these rooms, April 25, 2008, lots 59 and 60, where the note to lot 60 also discusses further services commissioned by the Empress from European factories.
