painted with a ship flying an American flag.

Condition

There are nine stars on the flag on the back of the ship. The mug has fired a little yellowish and the interior is finely crazed. Otherwise in good condition.

Catalogue Note

An almost identical mug is illustrated by Gordon, 1977, p. 20.  This particular ship seems to have been a popular example as another very similar mug was sold in these rooms, January 18, 1996, lot 150 and the image also appears on teawares (see lot 102 in the present sale).
