Condition

This chimney piece was originally designed to be painted and has subsequently been stripped. The top shelf is cracked and has slightly warped and as a consequence the frieze does not join smoothly. There are losses to the front edge and a section is chipped on the right hand side. There are losses to the gesso ornament throughout and with characteristic cracking particularly to the detail at frieze level. There are also losses to the detail of the dentil carving on the frieze. The frieze has holes suggesting that there was originally some further ornament which is now lacking. The left hand capital is cracked and with some losses to detail. The inner edge of the aperture is cracked and chipped. Some losses around blocks. The columns are both rather chipped approx two thirds of the way up. Both sides of the jambs have filled holes.
