Catalogue Note

Dado with an Egg and Dart running pattern was used widely by Kent most notably in the interiors of Burlington House, Chiswick House and Holkham Hall.

It is a thorough attempt by Kent to introduce classical architecture to the decoration of an interior. Used in ancient Greece on the Ionic capitals at the Erechtheum it was adopted by the Romans and was much favoured during the Renaissance. The egg shaped and arrow motifs are often cited as representing birth and death.
