A George III set of four iron armorial plaques circa 1822

each shield with the arms of Mary Queen of Scot's as Dauphine of France

Commissioned by William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire and cast from a 16th century armorial at the Palace of Holyrood House, Edinburgh

An interesting lot with some fine detail. Each crest has varying degrees of rust and stains but all are intact.

A fifth armorial of identical form is currently installed on the plinth of a statue of Mary Queen of Scot's by Sir Richard Westmacott R.A. in 1822. This was a commission intended for Chatsworth but moved to Hardwick, in his Handbook the 6th Duke writes;
'The shield on the plinth is from a cast moulded on a carving at Holyrood, and the adoption of it with the following inscription
The Arms of Mary Quene Dolphines of France,
The noblest Lady in Earth till advance,
Off Scotland Quene, of England also,
Off Ireland als God hath proved so
 - was among the accusations brought against Mary by Queen Elizabeth'.
