A large quantity of garden lamps 19th century

cast and moulded metal lights with fluted reserves and associated turned wooden supports together with twelve weighted lamp or chandelier supports, each with twin hanging loops contained in a wicker basket and pine crate (qty)

The torcheres appear to be in fair condition and many are misshapen and all are tarnished with varying degrees of rust. The wicker container is dry and dirty but otherwise in good condition.

These garden lamps may well have been acquired by the 6th Duke. He is known to have lit the gardens both at Chatsworth and at Chiswick. In the Handbook when discussing the Orangery, p. 8, he noted 'of a night it (the Medici Vase) holds powerful lamps, that send up such a magical light on the branches of the Altingia, that people cry out Fairy land'.
