Catalogue Note
A later copy after Andrea Sacchi's portrait of the artist Francesco Albani, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (see A. Sutherland Harris, Andrea Sacchi, Oxford 1977, pp. 77-8, no. 44, reproduced fig. 74). The Prado picture is probably to be identified with the self-portrait recorded in Sacchi's house at the time of his death in 1661, and later in Maratta's possession. Another variant, inscribed 'Francesco Albani' and dated 1664, is in the Accademia di San Luca in Rome: given its accessibility to artists in the 17th and 18th centuries, it almost certainly served as the source of inspiration for the present replica.
