Condition

Original canvas. There is bitumen and surface abrasions across the surface and there is a hole near the lower centre of the work. Held in a gilded frame.

Catalogue Note

The picture illustrates Charles Dickens's story 'The Cricket on the Hearth', published in 1846. The Dolls Dress Maker is Bertha, the daughter of Caleb Plummer, a toy maker. It can be no coincidence that the author was a close friend of the 6th Duke.
