Catalogue Note
Ashford marble is a type of limestone which is usually polished to a deep glossy black. In this instance the unusual smooth grey finish is deliberate, utilising the natural grey tones of the 'marble' in an unpolished state. It is quarried near Chatsworth at Ashford-in-the-Water. This rare vein of limestone was aquired by Bess of Hardwick, in the late 16th century, and who commissioned a chimneypiece in 1580 for her new house at Chatsworth.
