Description
- wood silvered metal
- 22cm. high, 18cm. wide; 8¾in., 7in.
depicting the Mother of God, oil on panel encased by an oklad chased and applied with a crowned halo
Provenance
Probably acquired by William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858) on one of his journey to Russia as an antique or presented to him by a member of the Russian Imperial family. The Duke was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary to the Russian Empire on the coronation of Czar Nicholas I in 1826.
Condition
The reverse inscribed: 'Centre No. 3...' with a further illegible word.
There is rubbing to the repoussé oklad and some losses to the Holy Mother's halo. This would have originally been silvered. The visible painted decoration is tired and dirty with craquelure. The concealed decoration is in fair order. The oklad is detached.
