- seawater mussel (seawater not an option in screens below); gilt-metal; silk plush
- 7cm, 2 3/4 in wide
the lid and base formed from two mussel shells, the interior lined with ruched pink plush, complete with mirror and gilt-metal implements: thimble, awl, bodkin, scissors and needlecase
Condition
Excellent condition with all parts fresh and complete although hinge is slightly bent so that it does not shut completely.

Objects made from mussel shell with gilt-metal mounts, such as this nécessaire, were popular souvenirs for visitors to the northern French seaside resorts, such as Dieppe and Boulogne, much favoured by English tourists in the latter part of the 19th century.
