A Neapolitan miniature holy water stoop, circa 1700

the carved rock crystal lidded basin with silver mounts surmounted by a pair of miniatures of St. Mary Magdalene and a praying male saint, on vellum, surrounded by silver and silver-gilt decoration incorporating two winged heads of cherubs 

Probably acquired by William Spencer, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858), in Italy although it may have been acquired by one of the family in the 18th Century.

Generally good condition consistent with age; wear to gilding; lower pendant finial is bent; miniatures with warping, the left possibly overpainted, the paint appears to be adhering to the glass.
