A Venetian model of a gondola by Pietro Paggiaro circa 1830

in a George IV rosewood and glass case, the painted model mounted on two blocks, its wooden base with a label with the scale in Venetian feet and signed by the maker Pietro Paggiaro / arfenale face, slightly distressed

Acquired by William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858) on one of his visits to Venice. The glass cover is in good condition. The gondola's cabin is damaged and detached with some losses. The fabric linings are all very faded. There is further damage and losses to the bow section of the deck. The rosewood base has some chips and would benefit from a clean and a re-polish.
