Twelve George III tôle ware oil wall lamps circa 1790

some cannister lids surmounted by a flambeau, variously decorated, two with later painted bodies, one lacking a lid (12)

Probably ordered by William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (1748-1811) Fair overall condition with much wear to the surface decoration and some rust. One lid is missing and three missing finials. One lamp has a damaged lid and some of the lamps are missing parts to the arms.

The design for this lamp relates very closely to that found in an anonymous printed lamp-makers catalogue now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum see (M63i, E)1331-1899.
