Condition
Original canvas. The edges have discoloured from where the canvas was previously framed. There are areas of craquelure across the surface. There is a small hole in the upper left quadrant, a tear approximately 8cm. long in the upper right quadrant and two further holes near the centre of the lower edge. The varnish has discoloured.

Newstead Abbey was the seat of the Byron family. The poet Lord Byron (1788-1824) was the sometime lover of Lady Caroline Lamb, niece to the 5th Duke of Devonshire.
