A George III satinwood Pembroke table circa 1790

purpleheart banding, tapering square legs with brass castors

Probably ordered by William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (1748-1811) Fair condition, the top is heavily stained and has losses to the banding and stringing. The mahogany lined drawer has a chip to one corner with further losses to the moulded decoration on the legs.

According to the inventories, the 5th Duke ordered a large number of Pembroke Tables for his residences. In the inventory of Chatsworth taken in 1792 such tables stood in the Blue and White Room, Mrs Hannah's Room, The North West Corner Room, Mr Crawfurd's Room, The Dressing Room to the Leicester Apartments and Lord Leicester's Room itself. The early nineteenth century inventories of Devonshire House, and the new wings at Chiswick also record a large number of Pembroke tables. This is likely to be one of those tables but given the sparseness of the descriptions it is not possible to establish an original location.
