of curved outline with serpentine seat moulded borders and raised on eight cabriole legs covered in blue and gold silk lampas circa 1840, regilding, chips, fabric distressed

Possibly acquired by William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (1748-1811);
Certainly owned by William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1857) who had the settee recovered circa 1840 as part of the furnishings of the new Ballroom at Devonshire House;

The canapé has substantial losses to the gilt gesso decoration, but also has much ingrained dirt, but the carving remains mainly intact. The frame is generally in solid condition and has impressive proportions. The upholstery is distressed with rips and worn areas.
