A George II featherbanded walnut folio cabinet circa 1730

the leather inset top above a pair of doors to each short side, the interior with three drawers, one lacking and with large apertures for folios, each long side with twin gilt-brass carrying handles, with early 19th century alterations and later plinth

The leather inset top is distressed with cracks and stains. The panelled doors and the panels to the sides all have significant vertical splits. Scuffs, marks and scratches throughout and some minor veneer losses.

The ground floor layout at Chiswick included a suite of Library Rooms for Lord Burlington's book collection. The central and largest room was furnished with 'four folio tables' recorded in an inventory taken in 1741, these are now in the Library at Chatsworth. There were 'a further two cases for larger books' situated under the windows in the outward circular rooms either side of the central Library Room. It is possible that the offered lot could be one of those cabinets, which were less elaborately ornamented, described in these smaller ante-libraries.
