the narrow rectangular block with a vitruvian scroll border

Condition

In good but dirty untouched condition, with minor wear and chips to edges/corners. Top with rough unfinished surface including some minor rust marks.

Catalogue Note

This plinth would have been positioned on top of a chimneypiece. It would have provided a 'step' for display or to support an overmantel or picture. It is similar to those photographed on the chimneypieces in the North East Saloon at Chiswick House in 1928 (fig. 1). Interestingly one of the Chiswick examples is a plaster cast while the other is of marble suggesting that the offered lot could be the pair to the marble example still in situ.
