An early Victorian metal lantern circa 1840

of typical form with shaped conical surmount and cylindrical vent

Generally very good condition. Later painting has some stains. There is a segment missing to the ball finial. Lacking all glazed panels.

These lanterns where part of a large commission placed by the 6th Duke circa 1840 for the external spaces at both Chatsworth and Devonshire House. In the photograph of the latter they can clearly be seen hanging under Decimus Burton's portico erected later in that decade. Further lanterns of this type remain in use at Chatsworth today.
