with gadroon carved moulding and acanthus headed jambs with foliate decoration in low relief, not constructed

Ordered by William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (1748-1811) as part of the remodelling at Devonshire House by James Wyatt

Condition

Twenty nine pieces. The mantelpiece has visible joins to the front corners and a repair to the back left corner. The gadrooned edge is broken into sections with chipping and losses. The frieze is broken too. The gilt bronze has verdigris. Substantial chipping to the edges throughout.
