Catalogue Note

In its review of the Duchess of Sutherland's Cripples' Guild catalogue for 1910, The Burlington Magazine (London, November 1910, p. 123) praised it as 'a pretty portfolio of illustrations, showing the success of this excellent guild, founded by Her Grace for the purpose of teaching crippled lads a trade. Not only has the guild been successful in that respect, but the boys' work appears to be excellent and wisely directed on fine lines.'

The Guild was established by Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland (1867-1955), whose first husband was Cromartie, 4th Duke of Sutherland (1851-1913), as The Potteries and Newcastle Cripples' Guild in 1898. The name was changed in 1907, by which time it boasted a showroom for the sale of its wares at 13-14 New Bond Street, London. The Guild closed in 1922.
