Condition

Both surrounds have a build up of dust and ingrained dirt and have significant losses to their moulded gilt gesso decoration. On one mirror the crest is missing as is the acanthus leaf decoration to the top right hand side. The frames have been drilled beneath the frieze and to the base sections. There is some filler, chips and fragmentation to the sites of these holes.

Another painted wall surround of similar design now frames the portrait by Sir Peter Lely of a young girl, possibly a member of the Boyle family which now hangs in the Red Velvet Bedroom at Chatsworth and which hung in the nineteenth century at Devonshire House.
