in the manner of William Kent, the broken pediment centred by a scrolled scallop shell and with borders of guilloche, line, reel and bead, the lower entablature with a Vitruvian scroll frieze, the base of the aperture with a guilloche frieze, distressed
Provenance
Ordered by William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858) as part of the remodelling of The East Drawing Room as The Dining Room undertaken by John Gregory Crace.
Condition
There is a build up of surface and ingrained dirt throughout and there are many losses to the moulded gesso decoration, especially to the foliate decoration on the pediment, the Vitruvian scrolls on the frieze and the guilloche decoration to the sides. Most of the damage is visible in the catalogue illustration. The frame has drilled holes to the top and bottom and to the 'ears'. Would make a handsome and impressive over-mantel mirror.
