Description

  • Mahogany metal and plaster
  • 48cm. high, 1ft. 7in.
the Terrestrial globe inscribed Wyld's Globe of the Earth with the Latest Discoveries, the Celestial Globe inscribed Wyld's Globe of the Heavens and dated 1874, each made up of twelve sets of hand coloured engraved gores with brass polar circles and meridian rings engraved with coloured horizons, the stands with baluster legs (2)

Condition

Both globes are in reasonably good condition though there are some scratches, chips and ingreained dirt throughout. The supports are good with old marks and scratches, especially to the meridian rings.

Catalogue Note

James Wyld (1812-1887) is first recorded in 1850 and is chiefly known as the cartographer responsible for the giant globes produced to his designs by the Georama firm (cf. Elly Dekker and Peter van der Ktogt, Globes from the Western World , 1993, p.180).
