Catalogue Note
This chandelier relates to the one which was commissioned for the Banqueting Hall at Lismore and which remains in situ, together with a set of twelve brass wall lights in the Gothic style. Unfortunately the 1908 Lismore Inventory does not record light fittings in other rooms distinctly enough to confirm the original position of this chandelier.
A pair of chandeliers commissoned for Adare Manor, Co. Limerick, Ireland by the 2nd Earl of Dunraven (d.1850) from A. W. N. Pugin are worthy of comparison as they share some characteristics. The Adare chandeliers can be compared to Pugin's medieval lamp designs issued in the 1846 catalogue of Messers Hardman & Co. of Birmingham. See The Christopher Wood Collection, Christie's South Kensignton, 8 November 2009, Lot 161 for the above mentioned pair.
