"Zareh" Kufic signature in twenty-five places: nineteen in metal thread and six in silk 

Condition

Silk pile generally good, near original 1/8 inch overall; metal brocade areas intact with very little oxidation, one 1/2 inch repaired slit in metal area at lower end of field. Silk brocade decoration in some metal thread areas, delineating cloudbands in the field design. Light abrash in deep burgundy field. 18 Kufic Zareh signatures in metal thread; 6 in silk pile. Original selvages intact. Original 1/2 inch green flatweave then long warp fringes intact. Good overall condition.

Catalogue Note

Cartoons found in Zareh's portfolio include a typical design from a well known Top Kapi prayer rug that shows the placement of cloudbands, inscriptions, arabesques and palmettes similar to those found in the present rug. Another rug of this design by Zareh, also signed twenty-five times, was sold Sotheby's New York, 8 October 1999, lot 132.
