"Zareh" Kufic signature in central palmette

Condition

Silk pile near original closely sheared 1/8 inch overall; metal thread brocade areas also intact with very minor oxidation. Silk decoration to metal guard border areas and to cloudbands in the field. Original selvages, now curled under due to density of weave and weight of metal thread guard border, small losses and fraying in lower corners and upper right corner. Ends with partial green flatweave and warp fringes; most of fringes lost---few remnants of fringes at lower right end. Upper end with bare remnants of flatweave. Sound fabric and condition.

Catalogue Note

The lot offered here and lot 100 in this catalogue appear to have been woven from the same cartoon, with slight variations.  The proportions are altered with the additional vinery at the base of the field in the present example, and there are subtle differences in coloring between the two rugs.  Please refer to footnote for lot 100 in this catalogue for a discussion of the Kum Kapi workshops.
