Catalogue Note

An extraordinary hand-colored copy. Anatoly Nikolaevich Demidov travelled in southern Russia and the Balkans in the company of several artists. The plates show picturesque scenes of daily life, battles and military maneuvers, town views, and portraits (many of which are full-length).

First published in 4 octavo volumes and 2 folio plate volumes in 1840-1842, the descriptive text to accompany this volume was, according to Brunet, issued separately from the plates, and it is unusual to find a copy with any text bound in.
