A good group of ship's papers signed by John Tyler (tenth President), Franklin Pierce (fourteenth President), James Buchanan (fifteenth President) and Ulysses S. Grant (eighteenth President), all matted glazed, and framed with the portrait of each president.



John Tyler. Printed broadside document (15 3/8 x 20 in.; 390 x 510 mm, sight) accomplished in a clerical hand and signed ("J.Tyler") and countersigned by the Secretary of State ("H. S. Legaré") and a notary public,  [Washington, D.C.], 6 October 1843, being a 4-language ship's passport for the vessel Rowena of Fall River, Massachusetts, commanded by Clark Estes, destination unknown but laden with provisions and equipment for a whaling voyage, embossed seal of the United States affixed at center of document; in very good condition. — Franklin Pierce. Printed broadside document (16 x 19 1/2 in.; 405 x 493 mm, sight) accomplished in a clerical hand and signed ("Franklin Pierce") and countersigned by the Secretary of State ("W. L. Marcy") and a notary public,  [Washington, D.C.], 12 October 1857, being a 4-language ship's passport for the vessel Maria Theresa of New Bedford, Massachusetts, commanded by Henry J. Coop, bound for the Pacific Ocean and laden with provisions and equipment for a whaling voyage; short tear along top margin touching 3 lines of the Spanish text. — James Buchanan. Printed, unaccomplished broadside document (16 x 20 in.; 405 x 510 mm, sight) accomplished in a clerical hand and signed ("James Buchanan") and countersigned by the Secretary of State ("Lew[is] Cass"), [Washington, D.C.], n.d.; slight discoloration along folds. — Ulysses S. Grant. Printed broadside document (16 3/4 x 21 1/2 in.; 425 x 540 mm, sight) accomplished in a clerical hand and signed ("U.S. Grant") and countersigned by the Secretary of State ("Hamilton Fish") and a notary public,  [Washington, D.C.],11 June 1877, being a 4-language ship's passport for the bark Reindeer of New Bedford, Massachusetts, commanded by J.G. Baker Jr., destination unknown, but laden with provisions and equipment  for a whaling voyage; light toning, long discolored center fold separation, a few small  holes along horizontal central fold, discolored remains of embossed seal of the United States along bottom margin.
