Folio (21 3/8 x 13 1/4 in.; 542 x 336 mm). Allegorical engraved title and letter-press title, 101 double-page maps of which 7 are folding, all with contemporary hand coloring; some creasing and marginal soiling, a few small fold-tears or fold separations, bottom margin of southern France renewed, lower and right margin of Castile renewed, tear in upper fold of New Castile affecting image and right margin renewed. Contemporary vellum, gilt-stamped in a panel design with the royal arms of Holland and initials "P P P", and four stamped corner pieces containing armillary spheres, gilt edges, in tan cloth drop-box; recased with new spine thongs, ties gone, soiled with a few scratches.

Catalogue Note

Beautifully colored example of one of several editions of Visscher's atlas issued after 1702 by his widow Elizabeth Verseyl (d. 1726). This edition includes, beyond the majority of maps by Visscher, maps by Carl Allard, Jacob de la Feuille, Jan van Loon, Jan Blaeu, and the map of South Africa signed by Visscher's widow.
