According to a letter from Professor James D. Hart (U.C. Berkeley, dated 11 May 1946), the 4-line manuscript is a fragment of his review of poems by Sarah Ann Lewis, a portion not published until after his death, but now found in the Woodberry-Stedman edition of his works (vol. 8, pp. 390–401). Lewis (1824–1880) was a Baltimore poet, friend and benefactor of Poe, known as his "Estelle."
