Catalogue Note
First edition to appear in monthly parts, "next to 'Pickwick' in parts, the pink-covered 'Sketches' in parts is the scarcest and the highest priced" (Eckel, p. 15). Part 3 has the Virtue publisher's catalogue and Mechi's cutlery catalogue; parts 2 and 5 have publisher's addresses.
"The majority were originally written for, and published by, six daily journals and magazines of the day; while a few were included for the first time, when the sketches as a whole were issued in book form" (Hatton & Cleaver).
