Catalogue Note

A Scottish cookery book, rare in first edition. "The following Treatise being intirely calculated for this northern climate, I have accordingly mentioned Scots measure in the receipts: they are not intended to teach those in high life, who have much better cooks than I can pretend to be..." ("Preface to the Ladies"). This work had run to a fourth edition by 1777. As well as cookery, the title indicates that there also sections on "filigree, gilding, japanning... [and] shell-work".
