Catalogue Note
Le mathématicien anglais Roger Cotes, collaborateur et ami de Newton, partagea avec lui la découverte de la méthode dite de Newton-Coste. Ils eurent une importante correspondante, publiée au XIXe siècle. Il est l'auteur de la préface de la deuxième édition de 1713 du Philosopiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica qui sera repris dans les éditions postérieures (voir lot 99).
Cet exemplaire, comme la troisième édition de Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica de Newton (lot 100), a été relié de façon plus luxueuse que les autres livres de la bibliothèque, en veau strié. il a appartenu à Buffon qui l'offrit ensuite à Fontaine des Bertins et porte l'ex-libris autographe du naturaliste sur la page de titre.
