Goethe, qui eut connaissance de cette illustration au moment de sa parution, se montra enthousiasmé par la manière fougeuse de l'artiste et déclara : « Delacroix est un talent d'élite, qui a rencontré dans le Faust son véritable aliment » (Entretiens de Goethe et d'Eckermann, 1862).
