Aux Etats-Unis, la recherche théorique en économie émerge à la fin du XIXe siècle avec Irving Fischer (1867-1947). Pour exposer sa théorie de l'équilibre de l'optimum économique, il décrit en détail le mécanisme complexe de sa fameuse machine hydraulique dotée de réservoirs (les deux modèles construits sont aujourd'hui perdus). Il traite également de théories monétaires qui devaient fonder sa réputation internationale.
