Philosophe et mathématicien, A. Cournot (1801-1877) a marqué son temps en économétrie et par ses recherches relatives au calcul des probabilités appliqué aux sciences sociales. Mûrie pendant dix ans, sa théorie des chances fera autorité pendant un siècle. Synthèse critique des travaux de Laplace et de Poisson, l'ouvrage anticipe les théories allemandes et anglaises de la statistique mathématique.
