Testament intellectuel du siècle des Lumières, l'essai posthume de Condorcet (1743-1794) substitue au sentiment religieux une idéologie du progrès qui, sous des formes diverses, anime le positivisme d'Auguste Comte de même que l'œuvre de Saint-Simon ou de Marx. Les Conventionnels qui avaient décrété l'arrestation de leur collègue en 1793 décidèrent l'achat et la distribution de trois mille exemplaires du livre qui venait d'être édité par la veuve du « philosophe infortuné ».
