Parue d'abord en français, l'autobiographie de Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) a été composée pour l'essentiel à Passy avant d'être achevée à Philadelphie. L'auteur communiqua ces importants fragments à son ami le duc de La Rochefoucauld. L'éditeur Buisson parvint à s'en procurer une copie qu'il fit traduire. L'édition anglaise (Londres, 1793) est fondée sur la version française. La troisième partie s'intitule Recueil de pièces, fragments et anecdotes relatives à Benjamin Franklin.
