Catalogue Note
Chargé par l'Académie des sciences de mesurer la longueur d'un arc du méridien au voisinage de Quito, La Condamine parvint ainsi à confirmer la théorie de Newton concernant l'aplatissement des pôles. L'expédition du Pérou dura de 1735 à 1744. Au retour, La Condamine descendit l'Amazone jusqu'en Guyane, rapportant l'arbre Quinquina et la résine élastique cahuchu. Il étudia aussi un projet de mesure universelle, proposant d'adopter pour unité la longueur du pendule battant la seconde à l'équateur.
