Catalogue Note
Né en 1567 au château de Sales, près d'Annecy, François de Sales abandonna subitement à l'âge de 26 ans la carrière d'avocat pour entrer dans les Ordres. Grâce à son éloquence douce et persuasive il parvint à ramener à la foi catholique nombre de protestants, sauf Théodore de Bèze. Il prêcha avec succès à la cour d'Henri IV. Nommé à l'évêché de Genève, il refusa les dignités que lui offrirent Henri IV, puis Louis XIII, qui souhaitaient le voir rester en France. A Annecy, il fonda l'ordre de la Visitation destiné aux soins des pauvres et des malades. Il mourut subitement à Lyon en 1622.
