François Ier fut vaincu à Pavie en 1525 et prisonnier pour un an entre les mains de Charles-Quint. La querelle entre le roi et l'empereur ne s'arrêtera qu'en 1544 par le traité de Crespy et la mort de François Ier en 1547. Le Milanais perdu dès 1522, la question de sa domination se posait. Les Sforza se manifestaient, Charles-Quint gagnait en puissance, le pape nouvellement élu s'en inquiétait. C'est un résumé de cette époque et des prétentions des uns et des autres qui font l'objet de ce livret.
