Ce volume est le résultat d'une brouille entre Piranèse et Lord Charlemont (James Caulfield, vicomte Charlemont) après la défection du second au financement des Antichità romane.
Piranèse distribua ce petit volume aux acquéreurs des Antichità et l'offrit à un petit nombre d'amateurs. On en possède la liste de la main de Piranèse, publiée dans le catalogue d'une exposition sur Piranèse (Smith College of Art, Northampton Mass. 1961, pl. n° 178).
