L'ouvrage compte deux parties : la première est consacrée à l'étude des sons, la seconde traite des instruments (pneumatiques, orgues, cloches etc...) abondamment illustrée de gravures sur bois et sur cuivre. Nombreux exemples de musique notée.
Cet ouvrage est dédié à Henri Louis Habert de Montmort (1600-1679), maitre des requêtes au Parlement de Paris qui joua un rôle important dans la vie intellectuelle de son temps et se fit, en particulier, le diffuseur du cartésianisme. Membre de l'Académie Française dès sa création (1634), son salon réunissaient les savants intéressés comme lui par la physique et fut le berceau de l'Académie des Sciences.
