Catalogue Note
Le Père Honoré Fabri (1607-1688), jésuite, fut un grand savant. Il enseigna la philosophie et les mathématiques aux collèges jésuites de Lyon, Arles, Aix-en-Provence. Partisan de Descartes, il dut s'exiler à Rome en 1646 où il sera emprisonné, sur l'ordre de Alexandre VII, pendant 50 jours pour avoir soutenu certaines thèses de Gallilée. Il fut libéré grace à l'intervention du cardinal Léopold de Médicis, dédicataire de l'ouvrage. A sa libération, il devint membre du tribunal de l'Inquisition, fonction qu'il occupa pendant 34 ans. Dans ses dernières années il se retira dans la campagne romaine où il se livra à de nombreux travaux dont plusieurs restèrent inédits.
