Catalogue Note

Later bronze vessels with a Yongzheng reign mark and of the period are rare, although a baluster form vase bearing a six-character Yongzheng mark on the base was included in the exhibition China's Renaissance in Bronze. The Robert H. Clague Collection of Later Chinese Bronzes 1100-1900, Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, 1994, cat. no. 37. The present vase represents Yongzheng antiquarism at its peak, bringing the shape and proportions of the standard zun form vase, found mainly in contemporary ceramics, to bronze designs. For the inspiration see a Yongzheng celadon-glazed zun vase with handles illustrated in Kangxi. Yongzheng. Qianlong. Qing Porcelain from the Palace Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1989, pl. 105, together with another related zun vase covered in flambe-glaze, pl. 109, also of the Yongzheng period.
