Catalogue Note
A Qianlong turquoise-ground vase of different shape but with similar ruyi-form handles and painted with related lotus spray design, from the Qing Court collection and still in Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 118. See also a slightly smaller turquoise-ground vase of this shape, painted with large lotus blooms between melons and butterflies, but lacking handles and bearing a Qianlong reign mark, from the collection of Edward T. Chow, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 19th May 1981, lot 607.
Vases of this type continued to be made during the reign of Qianlong's son, the Jiaqing emperor ; for example see a smaller vase of closely related form and decoration, but with handles in the shape of archaistic dragons, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 23rd October 2005, lot 439 ; and another painted with flower scroll decoration on a turquoise-ground and with two scroll-handles, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29th April 1996, lot 762.
