Description

la face incurvée très finement décorée des huit immortels et leurs serviteurs sur une mer tumultueuse, Shou Lao sur son daim, Liu Tieguai assis sur sa double gourde, Han Xiangzi sur un qilin avec sa flûte, Cao Guojiu sur son âne, Lan Caihe, Lu Dongbin, Zhang Gualo, He Xaingu tenant son lotus, au revers une scène lacustre de barques et de pavillons près d'une falaise rocheuse plantée d'arbres

Condition

The reverse in good condition with a few expected surface wears ; a small edge crack on the lower left side of the wrist-rest, about 7mm long ; the front with a small edge crack to the tail of the horse in the middle ; another edge crack along the lower part of the wrist-rest and coming in front as visible on the catalogue illustration ; the color of the back is more orange (naturally patinated than the front).

Compare with other carved ivory arm-rests, dated to the early and middle Qing dynasty, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, The Commercial Press, Hong Kong, 2002, vol.44, no.156 &157 p.190-191. Another identical wristwrest, dated to the Qianlong reign, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 11th May 1983, lot 1983. Another arm-rest carved with the same subject is illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Wrting Materials in the National Palace Museum, Exhib.catal., Taipe, 1971, pl.46.
