Description

Condition

The panel is distressed with cracks to the lacquer and missing inlays as visible on the photograph in the catalogue. A section which was originally fitted to the top of the double gourd and the lower inlaid lacquer section of the character "ji" are now missing (also visible on the photo). The reverse of the panel is nicely lacquered in gold and red on a black ground with bats amidst swirling clouds and a frieze of leafy gourds, there is a vertical crack running vertically across the height. The ruyi-sceptre has lost two inlaid jade plaques (the one in the centre and the one on the head, as visible on the photo). A section of one stem of grains in the lower section of the carved wood decoration has chipped off (visible on the photo), as well as a leaf of the branch of ruyi emerging from the rock in the carved decoration on the upper part of the shaft. The joint between the shaft and the ruyi head is loose.
